Job Vacancy: Maintenance Technician

Scope of Work: The Maintenance Technician will provide support to NASA’s sounding rocket experiments.   

Responsibilities: 

  • Plan, layout, assemble, install, maintain, and repair industrial machines, and products utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of the equipment, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and various measuring devices.   

  • Read and interpret product specifications to determine sequence and methods of assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial machines. 

  • Maintain a host of machine shop operating machines or equipment to maintain machine proper functionality and determine the need for adjustment or repair.  

  • Dismantle machine or equipment using hand tools or power tools to examine parts for defect or to remove defective part. 

  • Replace defective part with new part or repairs or reproduces part from various kinds of metal stock using hand tools such as scraper, file, and drill, and machine tools, such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, borer, and grinder. 

  • Perform routine maintenance to keep machines in good working order. 

  • Assemble and test operate machine to verify correction of malfunction. 

  • Set up, maintain, and follow maintenance schedules from manufacturers’ standards. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.   

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Eight (8) years of general experience and Six (6) years as a Maintenance Technician, or a total of Ten (10) years of general machine experience. 

  • Trade school or military training. 

  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of precision machines in a production machine shop environment to produce mechanical components, many of them one-of-a-kind.   

  • Ability to perform calibration functions and to use standard test equipment and precision measuring equipment in the quality assurance of items constructed, modified, or procured. 

  • Basic PC skills with ability to learn applications for routine documentation, reference, and 

correspondence. 

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English. 

  • Must be able to work independently and interact well with others in a team setting. 

  • Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities. 

  • Highly motivated, flexible organized and must be detail oriented. 

  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally. 

  • Training and Certifications in the following may be required:   

  • Crane Operator Certification per NASA-STD-8719.9 w/Change 2 and NPR 8715.3C   

  • Dye Penetrant Testing 

  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Control per GPR 8730.6A 

  • Forklift Operator Certification per GPR 8719.1B 

  • General Safety Awareness, IT Security, Environmental Compliance, and Personnel Safety and Health 

  • Hazardous Materials Handlers (see Safety and Health Plan) 

  • High Pressure Operations per GSFC/WFF 800-PG-8715.0.4A 

  • Mate / Demate per NASA-STD-8739.4 w/Change 6 

  • Ordnance / Pyrotechnics Certification per GSFC/WFF 800-PG-8715.0.2C   

  • Must have practical knowledge of worksite safety, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices. 

  • Must possess the ability to work in a team or alone and be able to change jobs on short notice.  

  • Must have and maintain a valid state driver’s license. 

  • Must have a safe driving record to operate a company vehicle.  

  • Must be able to successfully complete a drug/alcohol test and a criminal record check.
