James A. Banaski

Mr. Jim Banaski is a Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) Subject Matter Expert (SME) with a career in federal service spanning 28 years. Mr. Banaski has served with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the Department of the Army, and was on active duty with the US Army. Mr. Banaski’s numerous assignments with the CDC include serving as the Deputy Branch Chief and Acting Branch Chief for the Workforce & Institute Development Branch, Team Lead for the Global Response Preparedness Team, Senior PHEM Consultant for the International Emergency Preparedness Team, Emergency Coordinator for the National Center for Environmental Health, Exercise Lead for the Division of Emergency Operations, and Project Area Exercise Coordinator for the Division of Strategic National Stockpile. While serving with the Department of the Army Mr. Banaski served as an Exercise Officer with the First US Army, providing exercise support and reconnaissance expertise to the Weapons of Mass Destruction – Civil Support Teams, and was the Program of Instruction Manager for the US Army Chemical School, specializing in Nuclear, Biological and Chemical reconnaissance and biodetection. Mr. Banaski is an 11-year veteran of the US Army CBRN Corp and served in conventional and special operations assignments in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Mr. Banaski has served in numerous public health emergencies to include H1N1, numerous hurricanes, the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the American Samoa Tsunami response, the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami response, the Joplin, Missouri tornado relief, the world-wide Ebola response in Sierra Leone and Liberia, the Zika response in Central and South America, the Hurricane Matthew response in Haiti, and CDC’s Global Measles Response. Mr. Banaski has a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Biology from Drury University and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Management from Webster University. He also holds the Master Exercise Practitioner certification from the Department of Homeland Security and the Certified Emergency Manager designation from the International Association of Emergency Managers. Mr. Banaski is an Adjunct Instructor for Emory University, specializing in International Planning and Preparedness for public health emergencies, and is a Center Affiliate for Georgetown University’s Center for Global Health Science and Security. Mr. Banaski is the co-author of the book, “Essentials of Public Health Preparedness and Emergency Management”.
